Hi there, marketing in today's age is all about knowing who our audience is, knowing the places that they use and to create information that is engaging, entertaining and useful (so we are effectively becoming our own media companies). We are still consumed by people and businesses shouting loudly and cramming old practices (self promotion and disruption) into new disciplines (the social web). This is a recipe for disaster as many people are happy to market as though it is 2004.

This becomes an opportunity for the company who can relearn and become confident enough to have a voice, understand that we can't be everyone's friend and target a niche market with the outcome to be recognised as a valuable resource. We can do this via new spaces that have opened up to all of us this year such LinkedIn's publishing platform.

Hope that explains my take on the world, but things have changed massively in the past few years that our role is now as teachers rather than relentless sellers.

With the articles that I write, I hope that you're on board and they are useful to you and help shape the way that you see the world from a business/marketing perspective. If I can be of help, then that makes me happy.

Lovely comment Ewa. Agree with your sentiment, connections and interactivity is all about quality not quantity. The icing on top of the cake is looking to add value.

The person who delivers the most value to their target audience is better positioned than any of their competition.

Well said, Mark. I've read a few posts on this issue and it seems to be a general consensus that businesses should focus on a target market instead of sending their message to the crowd. This is why, it does not matter how many connections you make on LinkedIn, how many people follow you on Twitter or how many fans you have on Facebook, what is crucial though, is how valuable those connections are. I'll happily share this post with my followers on Twitter.
